Jesus made it clear we are called to love our neighbor as ourselves and that whatever we do for the least of his brothers and sisters, we do for him. Trinity is in the process of building a high-impact mission & service program. Here is what we're doing right now...
Local Mission & ServiceFood Boxes - Our Out of the Box Food Ministry is providing food boxes for over a hundred families who need a little help each month. Church members and others make donations to a fund. We then purchase most of the food at 18 cents a pound or less from the Yolo County Food Bank. Next we assemble the boxes and distribute them to the people who need them (see pictures). You're welcome to donate to Out of the Box by writing a check to "Trinity Church" and putting "Out of the Box" on the memo line on the check. Trinity currently has a partnership with Bryte Elementary School. We started with providing "lunch buddies" for kids who need friendships with adults who are positive role models. It's been very successful. We've expanded to providing food boxes to take some of the stress off of families that are living on the edge. Trinity's Latino Ministry group is working to meet the needs of the Latino Community in and around West Sacramento. We currently translate the 9:00 worship service into Spanish (with radio receivers like the U.N. ). We have held several events and groups and are continuing to look at the needs in the community and how we can help to address them. We are currently paying our youth director to spend time at the West Sacramento Teen Center and to start a Christian club for River City High School. Christmas Quilts and Christmas Families - Every December, we crank up the giving to provide tens of hand-made quilts to keep children warm. We also adopt families from local elementary schools and church members buy presents for the kids. We also add in some essential items for the families. We also fill over 100 "Goody Bags" - bags with essential items for people who need them and give the bags out every Christmas along with adopting families in need. We give 17% of our projected church income each year to mission and service outside the church and we also give through special offerings and money given directly by church members. 10% goes to national and international mission & service and 7% goes to local mission. Local organizations we support include... The Broderick Christian Center - day shelter, food closet, and transitional housing The Collings West Sacramento Teen Center Bryte Elementary School Stonegate Elementary School Yolo Hospice - West Sacramento Christmas Basket Program
We also use part of the mission allocation to support two of the church's service ministries - Out of the Box Food Ministry
- Trinity Latino Ministry
Service Within the Congregation We work hard to care for the members of our congregation, and there are always opportunities to help strengthen our community. Our deacons maintain a list of everyone in the congregation and make regular calls to them to see how they are and what their needs might be. We strive to provide transportation where needed and to send CDs of worship to people who can't attend. Building Ministry We are blessed with good facilities so we also do ministry through use of our facilities. Girl Scouts and their leaders meet in our classrooms, Weshington School District counseling meetings happen here, an Alcoholics Anonymous group meets here weekly, Hands Together parenting classes have met here, the Yolo County Peripheral Neuropathy Support Group has met here, we donated office space to Dave Dove - the director of the new Collings West Sacramento Teen Center - until their building was ready, and our fellowship hall frequently becomes a polling place. We're committed to helping to provide meeting space for non-profit community groups as we're able. Community Outreach We host several events that are open to the public every year, including our summer lawn concerts, our annual Kids' Fun Day, the summer Vacation Bible School, and our annual "Trunk or Treat" in the church parking lot. Then there's the popular Latino celebration, "Dia de Reyes" (Three Kings Day), where over 100 Spanish and Englush speakers from the chruch and the community gather to celebrate. Of course the community is also invited to our popular Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday worship services - both of which include fun and goodies for kids. Every year Andy Badertscher of JB Electric also decorates the church with tens of thousands of Christmas lights all computer-controlled and synchronized to music. Many community memebrs have told us how much they appreciate that. Youth ServiceOur youth have regularly scheduled service days (see the calendar for the next one or contact us), and we also do summer mission trip. In July 2004, we sent our youth to Oakland to work with with inner-city kids and the homeless and also to get to know ourselves and our God a little better. Then in 2006 our youth participated in Mission Mississippi a Hurricane Katrina relief trip (pictures). In 2009, we hope to go on a Mexico mission trip. Global MissionThrough the Presbyterian Church, we fund many kinds of national and global mission, including disaster assistance, missionaries, and new church development. We also directly fund Dennis Metcalf, a missionary from our own congregation, who works with Campus Crusade for Christ in Singapore. In Summer 2006, we sent an intergenerational team to Mississippi to do hurricane Katrina relief work trip, and we hope to have similar trips in the future. (See some pictures.) What's Next? We're always open to new ideas from our church family on how to serve our neighbors (whether near or far) and reach out to them in the name of Christ. |
